Introduction: Amla is one of the most often used herb in Ayurveda. It has a reputation as a powerful rejuvenating herb. The Amla fruit is reputed to have the highest content of vitamin C of any natural occurring substances in nature. Amla is good for almost everyone on a regular basis. Research shows that 8.75mg of natural vitamin C complex from Amla is equivalent to 100mg of the most commonly used synthetic vitamin C. Chemistry : The edible fruit tissue contains protein concentration 3-fold and ascorbic acid concentration 160-fold than those of apples. The fruit also contains considerably higher concentration of most minerals and amino acids than apples. Glutamic acid is 29.6%, proline is 14.6%,aspartic acid is 8.1%, alanine 5.4% and lysine 5.3% of the total amono acids. The fruit contained 482.14 units of superoxide dismutase/g fresh weight, and exhibited anti-senescent activity. |
